Debra's Journey

I was born in New York City and raised in Puerto Rico, where my earliest memories were shaped by the vibrant colors of nature, music, art, family and cultural traditions together with a deep connection to the land and sea.

Ancestry

As I explored my ancestry, I discovered roots that reach across Puerto Rico, the Taino people, Portugal, Spain, North Africa, and other regions whose traditions continue to inspire me. Rather than seeing these as separate histories, I experience them as threads woven together into who I am today.

Nature

Throughout my life, art has been my language and nature has been my sanctuary. The forests, the ocean, the mountains, the sun, the moon, the stars, the changing seasons, and the presence of animals have always reminded me that healing is part of the rhythm of life.

Art and Community

These influences have shaped not only my artwork, but also the way I relate to people- with curiosity, compassion, and respect for the many stories that each person carries.

Casita Irizarry is the living expression of that journey. It is a place where art, nature, ancestry, the wisdom of the five elements, and the belief that every person has the capacity to heal and come together to create spaces for creativity, connection, and renewal.

The Art of Becoming

Art has always been more than a creative practice for me- it has been a way of understanding myself, my ancestry, my relationship with nature, and my place in the world.

Every painting and sculpture at Casita Irizarry represents a stage in my journey. Each piece reflects a moment of growth, transformation, or discovery, inspired by the many influences that have shaped my life: my heritage, the natural world, spiritual traditions, the five elements, music, animals, the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Many of my sculptures begin with reclaimed and recycled materials- objects once overlooked or discarded. Through patience, intention, and imagination, they are transformed into something meaningful. This process mirrors one of the central beliefs of Casita Irizarry: that healing and transformation are always possible, and that beauty can emerge from any little experience.

As daylight fades, sculptures become illuminated with original moving imagery, creating temporary ceremonial installations where art, light, sound, and nature converge. These moments are invitations to pause, witness, and reconnect with yourself and the natural world.

The paintings fill the interior spaces with stories, color, and emotion, while some sculptures remain indoors and others thoughtfully placed throughout the gardens, where they continue their journey alongside the trees, the sun, the rain, the changing light, and the seasons.

Together, these works are more than a collection of art. They are the soul of Casita Irizarry. They embody the philosophy that creativity, nature, and the human spirit are deeply interconnected, and they invite every visitor to reflect on their own journey of becoming.

As an Internationally recognized exhibiting artist, my own creative practice continues to inform the therapeutic process. My work explores transformation, identity, nature, and the human experience through painting sculpture, and new media.  In 2023, my video art received Second Place at the Florence Biennale, reflecting my ongoing commitment to innovation and the expressive arts.

"We all carry an Inner Landscape shaped by the places, people, cultures, and elements that came before us."
